PHOTOS by San Francisco-based photographer Reuben Rodriguez are on exhibition at Y+Yoga this month and SLICE Gourmet Cafe in October.
The show titled “Inner Reflection: Beauty in the Heart of the Beholder” contains 24 photos, many of nature, many of unexpected beauty and peaceful moments.
This is his first show in Shanghai, in laid-back venues where people are likely to be more receptive to his message.
“I want to share with people the beauty I saw and remind them to slow down sometimes and simply enjoy their life,” says Rodriguez, who writes captions detailing the moment the image was captured in Shanghai.
“Captions are a very important part of my works, maybe as important as the picture,” he says.
“I don’t capture images, consultant” for the upmarket family stationery firm, Smythson. She will work two days a week. they capture me,” he says.
When he goes out shooting, he puts on headphones, listens to music and walks about, exploring unfamiliar places without a plan or destination.
“I have experienced that when something or someone captures me, I come fully alive in my mind, heart and body,” says the photographer.
“A photographer should be honest to his heart. He doesn’t think something to be beautiful,,ugg boots, he feels that.”
Rodriguez says Shanghai is a fast-paced city where it’s difficult for people to pay enough attention to the beauty around them.
The choice of venue was important – a relaxed cafe and a yoga center where people are more likely to slow down. With Print Pelican customized stationery business card printing, customers can create eye catching materials to enhance the effectiveness of
China warned of superbug invasion
China warned of superbug invasion
A LEADING medical expert has warned that the excessive use of antibiotics in the country’s health system and agricultural industry can make China vulnerable to an explosion of superbugs resistant to almost all drugs.
Zhong Nanshan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a medical tutor with the World Health Organization, said China is among the world’s most reckless antibiotics users with doctors routinely prescribing multiple doses to treat simple conditions such as fever, colds and sore throats.
To make matters worse, the country also depends on the massive use of antibiotics in its fishing and agricultural industries, leading to a tainted food chain, Zhong said.
Chinese people consumed 10 times more antibiotics than their counterparts in the United States, but 20 percent of that was not necessary, Zhong told yesterday’s West China City Daily.
The rampant overuse has caused a frightening increase in drug-resistant bacteria,Booq’s Taipan Lift-L is a stylish belkin laptop bags/briefcase that is checkpoint-friendly yet designed for everyday use. The case opens 30 degrees for Zhong added.
This has put the country in great danger from a possible outbreak of the latest superbug to be discovered, which is resistant to all the most power drugs, including antibiotics.
The bacteria, believed to have originated in India and which has spread to other parts of the world including the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Japan, has so far infected 170 people and killed at least five patients.
The superbug is, in effect, a new gene called New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, or NDM-1, which makes bacteria highly resistant to almost all antibiotics.
The Ministry of Health said earlier the superbug hadn’t been detected on the Chinese mainland so far.
The way to fight it, however, experts say, is to reduce the use of antibiotics and make new medical breakthroughs.
Prescription guidelines to restrict antibiotic use were issued by the Ministry of Health in 2004.
The State Food and Drug Administration also bans the sale of antibiotics without a prescription.
However, some hospitals,With Print Pelican customized stationery business card printing, customers can create eye catching materials to enhance the effectiveness ofconsultant” for the upmarket family stationery firm, Smythson. Famous brands of yesteryear make a comeback
Famous brands of yesteryear make a comeback
GRANDMA used to swear by her Xiefuchun duck-egg face powder and her Baiqueling hand lotion. Now these time-honored old brands are showcased in a new shopping mall exclusively for nostalgia goods. Zhang Qian reports.
People today show off with luxury imported handbags, wristwatches and cosmetics, but in the 20s and 30s of last century, and even in the 70s and 80s, status symbols were famous Chinese and Shanghai brands such as Xiefuchun cosmetics, Wangxingjie hand-held fans, and Zhangxiaoquan scissors. This leather black laptop bag makes a perfect addition to anyone’s outfit.
Many are long gone, but some remain and have been revived around the country.
A four-floor shopping mall showcasing more than 100 famous brands opened in Pudong New Area in late May and is attracting some customers, as well as nostalgia seekers and the curious.
Zhonghua Laozihao Shangcheng (Time-Honored Chinese Brand Shopping Mall) at the Pudong Road S. near Zhangyang Road features examples of such cosmetics, appliances, bicycles, wristwatches, food stuffs, clothing and fans.
Most come from other cities and provinces and are familiar to local old-timers because they were sold in Shanghai.
Almost all the famous brands are more than 100 years old, according to Daisy Wang, a member of the mall’s planning department.
Many Chinese customers relied on time-tested brands, known as “laozihao” (time-honored brands with 100 years history), and swore by their quality.
Though many products were indeed of good quality, inefficient manufacturing and marketing made them lose market share as they were swamped by competition from products from overseas since China’s reform and opening up in the late 1970s.The Barcelona comes in medium and large sizes, for holding 15-inch and 17 inch laptop bags, respectively
Many of the surviving time-honored brands have regained popularity, especially with young people who are reminded of the value of Chinese culture.
The first cosmetics company in China was Xiefuchun in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, opened in 1830. It was especially famous for three products – “duck-egg” (shaped like little eggs) powder, scented hair oil and scented bars. The colorful “eggs” were threaded on strings that contained eggs for lipstick, rouge, foundation and other essentials. Ladies sometimes wore bracelets of colorful eggs, so they could fix their makeup anywhere.
The products were used by the royal families of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) and got the silver award for products in the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915 (Moutai spirits won gold).
“We used to be the No. 1 company in the field before the 1990s,” says Chen Gang, chairman of the trade union of Xiefuchun Cosmetic Co. “But we lost the market quickly with the invasion of cosmetics from overseas.”
Imported and easy-to-use “xuehuagao” (skincare cream) was preferred by a lot of consumers since the 1980s, according to Chen. Xiefuchun did try to update to more timely products like skincare creams, but could not compete.
The same is true of other time-honored brands, such as Changzhou hair combs, (first made 1,600 years ago), and 135-year-old Wangxingji handheld fans. Imported and domestic plastic combs and electric fans dominated the market.
During the worst time, Wangxingji lost around 1 million yuan (US$147,358) annually, according to Sun Yaqing,We test-carried a bunch of cool laptop bags, backpacks, and messenger bags to find one that will keep you (and your laptop) on the go chairman of Wangxingji Fan Co.
The old fashioned hair combs and the handheld fans are also featured in the new mall.
Though many of these companies were written off or went under, some make a comeback around 2000 when quite a few decided to use their traditional techniques to deliver an updated, more fashionable-looking product. After all, the sold traditional techniques were their strength.
“Assembly lines are more efficient but they can never compete with handmade crafts in delicacy,” says Jin Songqun, chairman of the Changzhou Comb Co.

Emerging devices ‘the next big thing’
THE proliferation of digital gadgetry made possible by higher-speed networks and more-powerful chips is proving a gold mine for companies like chip designer Qualcomm,We test-carried a bunch of cool laptop bags, backpacks, and messenger bags to find one that will keep you (and your laptop) on the go telecommunications giant AT&T and device maker HTC.
The booming emerging devices market includes e-book readers, portable navigation devices, in-car telematics, digital photo frames, smart meters and game devices.
After the mobile phone, “it’s the next big thing,” said David Haight, vice president of AT&T’s emerging devices business development division.
By 2014,The Barcelona comes in medium and large sizes, for holding 15-inch and 17 inch laptop bags, respectively more than 84 million WiFi or 3G-connected devices will be sold in the United States, up from 6 million units in 2008, according to estimates from Strategy Analytics, a US-based research firm.
Haight’s industry outlook is shared by Bill Davidson,This leather black laptop bag makes a perfect addition to anyone’s outfit. senior vice president of San Diego-based chip designer Qualcomm. The company is working on a range of emerging devices products, from chip design and portable satellite TV services to next-generation displays for e-book readers and application stores.
“Every consumer electronics device and car will be connected,” Davidson said during an Editor’s Day conference last month held by Qualcomm.
San Diego-based Qualcomm held the conference to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
“Devices will be able to receive the Internet and tell drivers where they are,” Davidson said.
In the realm of design, Qualcomm has developed a chipset family coded Snapdragon. The latest Snapdragon, expected in the fourth quarter, features a clock speed of 1 gigahertz and 1.5 gigahertz – close to that of an entry-level laptop.
The Snapdragon is designed to power a new generation of devices, including advanced smart phones, smart books that feature a computer function just slightly bigger than a handset in size, and connected consumer electronics, according to Qualcomm.
Some emerging devices, such as Amazon’s Kindle, Dell’s Streak, Huawei’s S7 Tablet and wireless health care devices with chips and wearable wireless sensors, run on chips manufactured by Qualcomm.
Qualcomm’s next-stage marketing strategy is to put Snapdragon logos on devices, said Wang Jing, the company’s executive vice president.
The new FLO TV device, made by Taiwan-based HTC, is a centerpiece of emerging devices.
The broadcast TV service, with complementary 3G network support, allows users to watch customized TV channels from any location. The device can be slipped easily into a pocket.
The service charges users fees starting from US$10 to US$15 monthly.
It is especially popular during events such as the World Cup, according to service operator MediaFLO Technologies.
The company is in talks with other possible services partners, such as PCCW in Hong Kong.
“Clearly, mobility and data are universal needs,” said Martin Fichter, HTC’s vice president of product management and planning.
HTC, which launched its own brand in the Chinese mainland for the first time last month to replace Dopod, will develop more new devices, said Fichter.
“This is the year of data,” said AT&T’s Haight.
AT&T aims to cash in by providing WiFi and 3G services enabling devices to access the Internet and application downloads, according to Haight.
In the realm of e-book readers, for example, AT&T has set up business models to address the needs of varying user bases of readers, according to data traffic.
The models include wholesales data packages for Amazon’s Kindle and prepaid data for Apple’s iPad.
The rapidly growing e-book market will bring carriers a unique opportunity because users want to “be connected,” said Cong Sen, an editor of ZOL, a professional IT Website in China. “It’s a nice idea, and Chinese carriers should learn something from it.”
Chinese carriers have cooperated with e-book reader vendors like Hanwang and Shanda, but high data-traffic fees have discouraged users.
IMF: World economy recovering
IMF: World economy recovering
THE world economy is recovering moderately but still faces challenges such as the need for medium-term fiscal consolidation, John Lipsky,,Fashion boots, the International Monetary Fund’s first deputy managing director, said yesterday.
“They are mainly confident that there is a moderate recovery under way globally,” he told reporters in Seoul, referring to delegates at the G20 meeting of deputy finance and central bank chiefs.
“Obviously there are risks and challenges, but things seem to be moving more or less in line with our forecast,” he said, listing well-designed exit strategies and medium-term fiscal consolidation as challenges.
He said some good progress had been made in discussing changes to the IMF’s board, but did not elaborate.
G20 members have pledged to reach an agreement on the issue by the time leaders meet in Seoul in November.
The United States, frustrated at Europe’s refusal to share more IMF power with emerging economies, last month blocked plans that would have kept Europe’s dominance over the board.
Emerging economies have called for a bigger say in international institutions such as the IMF in line with their increasing contribution to the global economy.
An Indonesian official told reporters emerging economies want more voting powers as well as a readjustment in the way global economic policy is made.
“For emerging markets, the important thing is not only the size of the increase of the quota, but the general idea of the relationship between the quota and governance of the IMF – and that needs to come in one package,” said Hartadi Sarwono,Spacious main compartment with zippered center divider securely keeps you most important gear safely15.4 laptop bags. deputy governor of the Indonesian central bank.,air jordan shoes,

Around half of the migrant workers who are under mental stress could have more than one session to help ease their pressure, the ministry said.
Labor disputes, complaints and wage arrears have bothered migrant workers in recent years and their psychological problems have aroused increasing concerns, especially after a series of suicide attempts earlier this year by workers at Foxconn – the world’s biggest electronics contractor.
The ministry has urged all employers to set up a health database for migrant workers in all 65 counties.
The database should include the basic information of migrant workers, their health issues and health service records, it said.
The database should cover more than 80 percent of the migrant workers, and the employers are responsible for updating the database, according to the ministry.
The ministry will also launch studies on occupational diseases in all the pilot areas and offer migrant workers more knowledge about occupational disease prevention.
Local health authorities have been urged to provide free basic treatment for migrant workers who have tuberculosis. All workers who are suspected of contracting tuberculosis could receive free chest X-rays and sputum smear checks, the ministry said.
Prevention work on mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, syphilis and hepatitis B will also be promoted among migrant workers in the pilot areas and benefit up to 90 percent of them, the ministry said.

Guide-scalper nexus busted
Guide-scalper nexus busted
SOME tourist guides have been found ganging up with scalpers to make a profit by trading World Expo tickets and pavilion reserve tickets, city police said yesterday.
Pavilion staff were also illegally allowing visitors to enter via staff passages after taking money, police said.
Zhao Yong, deputy chief with the police Economic Crime Investigation Department, said, “The collusions are mostly individual cases and the offenders will be severely punished.” Zhao supervises security at the Expo site.
The police would also intensify their crackdown on the underground trading of Expo tickets, Zhao said.
Staff would be fired if it was confirmed that they had colluded with scalpers or took bribes while tourism agencies would be warned about guides who are involved in scalping, police said.
In one recent case, police uncovered a scalpers’ gang suspected of taking advantage of tickets designated for group students.
Normally, a student group of 30 can get four extra Expo tickets free for teachers.
The tour guides responsible for the group would then secretly tell the scalpers who would use fake teacher’s certificates to claim the free tickets.I continued my journey past the old “10th Street High School,” admiring how my former bags for school district has taken gentle care of my old “middle school.
Police said they had discovered 36 fake teacher’s certificates from one suspect.
The tour guides were also found passing on extra reserve tickets to scalpers, police said.
Earlier, Shanghai Daily reporters discovered that some individuals and travel agencies had worked out their guanxi and were providing World Expo VIP tours that are not supposed to be for sale. Offers varied from 500 yuan (US$74) to 1,500 yuan.
Police said they will team up with the market watchdog and urban management authorities on the crackdown. A 230-member law enforcement team patrols inside the Expo site every day.
On July 14, police caught a gang of eight persons making and selling fake reserve tickets of the China Pavilion, one of the most popular pavilions at the Expo site.
The city also plans to offer rewards to those who provide tips on scalping or other Expo-related crimes.
In a recent crackdown from July 24 to August 20, police nabbed more than 3,000 suspects involved in Expo ticket scalping and selling of fake Expo licensed products.

Mexico nabs another drug lord
A TEXAS-BORN fugitive known as “the Barbie,” who allegedly led a violent smuggling network, grinned as he was paraded in handcuffs before reporters in Mexico City yesterday – the third suspected drug lord to fall in Mexico in the past 10 months in a coup for President Felipe Calderon’s war on cartels.
Edgar Valdez Villarreal, who got his improbable nickname from his fair complexion, is wanted in the United States for allegedly smuggling tons of cocaine. In Mexico, he is blamed for a brutal turf war that has included bodies hung from bridges, decapitations and shootouts as he and a rival fought for control of the divided Beltran Leyva cartel.
As he came before reporters, he still wore the green polo shirt in which he was captured the day before. He grinned as police described a high-flying and violent life.
Security forces had been closing in on Valdez for over a year, the biggest breakthrough being the death of his boss,These bags are the perfect canvas laptop bags to give to your Mom for Mother’s Day Arturo Beltran Leyva, in a December shootout with marines, Police Commissioner Facundo Rosas said.
